UFC 130: Picks and Discussion

Main Bouts (On Pay-Per-View):
-Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (31-8; #3 Light Heavyweight) vs. Matt Hamill (10-2)
I expect this fight to looking something like the Mousasi/Jardine fight except with the favorite (Rampage) coming out on top in a tough decision.
-Frank Mir (14-5; #8 Heavyweight) vs. Roy Nelson (15-5)
The way I see it, Nelson has the technical advantage anywhere the fight goes. Frank has got better size but I'm not sure he knows how to use it. With Mir showing that he doesn't have the chin for big punchers, I'll take Roy by TKO.
-Stefan Struve (21-4) vs. Travis Browne (10-0-1)
Browne looked good against Kongo, I actually thought he got robbed in that fight. I think Browne will definitely have the advantage on the feet. Struve has shown he doesn't quite have the chin for big punchers so I expect him to be sleeping before the night is over. Browne by KO.
-Thiago Alves (18-7; #4 Welterweight) vs. Rick Story (12-3)
Rick Story is one of the most underrated guys in MMA IMO. Story has great wrestling, great BJJ and he has good striking. I think Story wins this as long as he doesn't play the striking game with Alves, I'll take him by decision.
-Brian Stann (10-3) vs. Jorge Santiago (23-8; #6 Middleweight)
Probably the fight of the night right here. I see a back and forth slugfest à la Santiago/Misaki with Santiago coming out on top by decision.
Preliminary Bouts:
-Miguel Torres (39-3; #5 Bantamweight) vs. Demetrious Johnson (20-5; #8 Bantamweight)
Johnson's wrestling and speed will be too much for Torres. I'll take Johnson by decision.
-Tim Boetsch (12-4) vs. Kendall Grove (12-
Could go either way but I'll take Grove by decision.
|||I'm thinking Hammil by decision (repeat of the evans fight- borefest), santiago tko (stoked to see him fight in the UFC again, I could never watch him in the other orgs after strikeforce) Mir via submission, Alves tko|||I forgot the struve fight. I'll give it to struve if he can survive the first two rounds. I think brown will gas, and struve could sub him in the third or do enough to get the decision.|||Rampage is the only fighter I bought an MMA shirt for. Unless you count my Fedor Absolute Victory T i just got last week.
I agree Rampage looked not in the game vs Rashad but I'm pullin for him to knock Hamill's head off.
Rampage is about the $$$ and this is the best time for him to make it.
As for Roy vs Mir, I'm pullin for Roy.
Picking Santiago against Stann too cuz I can't stand how Stann is being hyped just cuz he's a dumb army guy and its memorial day. who cares. get ktfo.
I don't have any valid points to point out....these are just who I want to win. Can't remember the rest of the card.......Torres on undercard? Don't like his haircut....get KTFO too.
Struve....don't like that kid. Get KTFO.
Story vs Alves.....meh....I'll go with Alves cuz he has some awesome Muay.
|||I bet 70% of these fights are ending in a decision.|||The only reason I picked Hammill is because I don't think Rampage will be able to stuff his takedowns. Hammill won't stand with him, and I think it will be boring as hell.|||im glad edgar and maynard are off the card|||

I agree Matt's game is to hold Quinton down and I think he can very well do that.
That's the only way though, UD. Other than that, Rampage takes it.
Hopefully Quinton by KO.|||

Yeah, I'd love to see Rampage knock him on his *. The two fights I'm really up for seeing are the Santiago and Mir/Nelson fights. I hope Mir and Nelson put on more of a show than Mir/Cro Cop.|||People forget Rampage has pretty good TDD. Yea, he got taken down by Rashad a few times but Rashad was a bad as* wrestler in college (although he was inconsistent). Also, if you look at the number of Rashad's attempts vs actual takedowns (3/12), you'll see that Rampage did pretty well.
Rampage's wrestling has looked great against elite wrestlers in the past (Hendo, Lindland, Randleman) and Hammil's wrestling is nowhere near those guys levels. I don't expect Hammil to get more than one or two takedowns at the max.|||Well I hope you're right, I don't want to see Hammill sit on someone for three rounds. I wanna see Rampage swing for the fences :)|||

Good call. I didn't wanna tout Rampage's TDD/wrestling cuz i know Hamill is pretty beastly.
I hope Hamill tries to be a striker vs Quinton. Doubt it though.
|||Also, look out for this dude name Renan Barao on the undercard. He could be the next big thing out of the Nova Uniao camp. He's 25-1 and he's only 24 years old. He's fighting Cole Escovedo so that should be an awesome fight.|||

I bet 70% of these fights are ending in a decision.

Best prediction of the day.
If you take the card as a whole, 7 out 10 fights (70%) went to the judges.
I only picked 2 out of 5 but I did get both the method and the round right in both of those as well as the fighter (Browne and Stann).|||Couple of things I take from this card...
Rampage/Hammil - Not much to say about this fight. I think it went pretty much the way people thought. Bring on Jones for Rampage.
Mir/Nelson - It looks like Big Country's big belly is catching up with him. In the past he's never had the best cardio but he's never quite faded like he did tonight. I like Roy as a fighter and he has great skills but you can't utilize those skills if you don't have the cardio to do it. I think to stay relevant he's gonna have to drop to 205 (which should be pretty easy seeing as how he has a high body-fat percentage).
Browne/Struve - Browne is one of the top HW's in the UFC (That's not really saying much but whatever). I'd pick him over every other HW except JDS, Cain and maybe Carwin (Have to see what kind of performance he puts in against JDS). Dude's future is looking bright. Only slight critique I got of him is his cardio (which isn't terrible) but it's something that can definitely be improved.
Story/Alves - Rick Story is who I thought he was...a BEAST! He'll give anyone at WW in the UFC some problems. As for Alves, I think he should move up to 185. He definitely looks better when he's fighting with a lot of muscle. I think the "Dolce Diet" actually hurt him in this fight. If the Alves that was ballooning up to 190+ after the weigh-in fought Story, it might have been a better fight. Combine that with the stale competition at 185 and I think he'd be a contender right away.
Stann/Santiago - The old Santiago showed up in this fight. Not sure where Santiago goes from here. As far as Stann, not sure where he goes either. He has massive power in his hands, but he's not very technical. There are a few guys that I think could outclass him on the feet at 185 and others that I know would out wrestle him. I say give him the winner of Munoz/Maia.
