The most famous referee in the history of MMA, ‘Big’ John McCarthy is rumored to be headed for a return to officiate at a UFC event for the first time in over two and a half years.
The news comes from Sherdog.com’s Greg Savage who mentions it on his twitter account, stating, “Just heard “Big” John McCarthy is scheduled to referee the UFC on Versus card in San Diego.” So far there’s no official confirmation however.
The UFC On Versus card is set for August 1st and is headlined by Jon Jones Vs Vladimir Matyushenko.
McCarthy became part and parcel of the UFC experience from as early on as UFC 2 and helped set the standard by which referees must not try to live up to in the octagon. At the end of 2007 he announced that he was stepping down from his duties as a referee to begin a new broadcasting career. He would go on to work as an analyst for The Fight Network, and later commentated for Affliction, who at the time were a major rival for the UFC.
Almost a year later in November of 2008 McCarthy began to referee again, but he has yet to officiate another UFC event, with rumors of bad blood between himself and the promotion.
For reasons that are still unclear it appears that McCarthy is finally ready to step foot in the octagon once more, and in all honesty it’s not before time. UFC president is often critical of the officiating at UFC events, so it makes no sense that one of the most respected referees in the business has not been able to get work on the sports biggest stage.
thts great if its true he wont let the fighters get hurt he wont make bad calls (a lot of wht happened at dream 15) and ull see the fights stopped when they need to be (cough) brock lesnar ufc 116
stopped? why? EVERY time rosenthal told brock to show him something, lesnar responded sliding, putting his feet on carwin's hips, or tried to improve his position while covering/blocking blows. believe it or not, there are times when all you can do is cover and let the other guy punch himself & while looking for an opening. whatever brock was doing, it was enough to show he wasnt hurt or out which was obviously the right call as brock got back to his feet ON HIS OWN and got control of carwin to end round.
bottom line is brock moved enough to show he was still in the fight. when he had an opening, even a small one, he tried to take it. he improved position enough to get back to his feet.
IMO, a fight of that magnitude needs to be let go as looooooooong as possible. let the fighters decide the winner/loser. those two beasts can take care of themselves. ref is there to make sure no one takes permanent, career threatening damage.
if it was stopped, we all would have been robbed of an epic fight, lesnar robbed of finding something in himself that night, & carwin robbed of a learning experience im sure he will come back 10x more prepared for...
IMO. great job by rosenthat that night.|||
Herb deen has always been better McCarthy is just more well know because his been doing it for longer
i agree. dean knows fighting. those two easily stand above the rest...|||Great if Big John is back. The thing about John and Herb Dean that I like is that, if a fighter is in trouble, they give them a shot at fighting back, but stopping it before it gets too brutal. This is something in Japan that needs to get better, theres to much warrior spirit going on and I think............ like last Sengoku, with one of the Korean fighters getting brutally pounded on in GnP, it was really going on a bit too long. Perhaps John can mentor referees like Kim Winslow who make questionable calls. If you want too see a woman official do their job as a referee, look at Sparkle Lee who refs boxing in NY/NJ, she lets the fighters fight.
